For fashion and textile manufacturers, ZDHC compliance has become one of the most scrutinised aspects of the supply chain. But what does it actually require — and what does it not require?

ZDHC Is Not an Audit

A common misconception is that ZDHC is an audit programme. It is not. ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) is a multi-stakeholder programme that sets standards for chemical management, wastewater, and the use of safer chemistry in production. Compliance is achieved through a combination of:

The Gateway Platform

ZDHC uses its Gateway platform to centralise chemical product data. Suppliers and manufacturers are expected to ensure the chemical products they use are listed on Gateway with a valid conformance level (Level 1, 2, or 3). Level 3 represents the highest degree of chemical formulation transparency.

Before a facility can credibly claim ZDHC alignment, they need to conduct a full chemical inventory audit — identifying every chemical used in production, wet processing, and maintenance, and checking each against Gateway listings.

What Minerva Does

Minerva Sustainability offers ZDHC-aligned training and chemical management support. We help facilities:

Note that Minerva does not conduct ZDHC InCheck assessments — our focus is on training and preparation, equipping your team with the knowledge and systems to manage chemicals proactively.

Practical Steps for Facilities

If you’re preparing for ZDHC compliance, here’s where to start:

  1. Complete a chemical inventory — document every product used across all departments
  2. Cross-reference Gateway — check which products have valid ZDHC conformance
  3. Replace non-conforming products — work with chemical suppliers to find ZDHC-conformant alternatives
  4. Establish wastewater monitoring — set up a regular testing programme in line with ZDHC Wastewater Guidelines
  5. Train your team — ensure responsible persons understand MRSL requirements and safe chemical handling

Looking Ahead

ZDHC requirements are tightening. Brands are increasingly requiring ZDHC alignment from Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers — not just direct manufacturers. Facilities that build robust chemical management systems now will be better positioned as these expectations cascade further down the supply chain.
